As you all know Bonfire Night originated from London and was originally called The Gunpowder Plot. The Gunpowder Plot was supposed to kill the protestant king, King James 1st. As protesting was a big thing then, King James the 1st was supposed to be replaced with a catholic queen in 1605. Back then however, it was illegal not to celebrate Bonfire Night.

Now as most people think, Guy Fawkes was the person who led this foul plot but actually it was a man called Robert Catesby who led The Gunpowder Plot. Guy Fawkes only guarded the 36 barrels full of gunpowder he never actually led the plot himself. When Fawkes was discovered, he was tortured for 2 weeks before he ratted out the 13 other people involved in doing the plot.

The alarm was set about ‘Guy Fawkes’ plot to explode the House of Lords was exposed when an anonymous letter was delivered to Lord Monteagle. This letter said that Lord Monteagle should stay away from The House of Lords therefore making him sound the alarm about it. Lord Monteagle however, listened to the letter and sent guards under The House of Lords and that is how Guy Fawkes plan to help Robert Catesby’s plan go through was spoiled.
